The Smithtown Library Now Equipped with Automated External Defibrillators
The Smithtown Library is pleased to announce that a new public access AED (Automated External Defibrillator) device has been installed in each of our Library buildings. The devices are located at the Circulation Desk and are equipped with both adult and child pads. Library staff members in each building volunteered to be trained in how to recognize a cardiac emergency and how to use the device to shock the heart into a regular rhythm when indicated. In addition, each volunteer received CPR training.
Every year more than 300,000 people suffer cardiac arrest and 92 percent don’t survive. When defibrillation is provided within 5 to 7 minutes of cardiac arrest, the survival rate increases to 30-45 percent.
“Many residents of all ages come in and out of our Library buildings daily and it is peace of mind to know that this possible life-saving equipment is on hand should the need arise”, said Library Director Robert Lusak. He also added, “I was impressed with how many of our staff members volunteered for the training, which confirms the value our Library puts on these devices.”
