World War I and America & Long Island at War Program Series

stamina

2017 marks the 100th anniversary of the United States’ entry into World War I.  The Smithtown Library will host various programs and events in remembrance of this historic date with a program series titled World War I and America. In addition, The Smithtown Library’s Long Island Room will present a corresponding program series titled Long Island at War.  A complementary Long Island Room exhibit will be on view throughout the year.  The Smithtown Library invites you to partake in these programs and events to commemorate the importance of America’s involvement in World War I and gain a deeper understanding of our veterans’ experiences over time.

Children can Trunk or Treat in the parking lot at the Library. We will have several cars set up with goodies to hand out to trick-or-treaters. The fun will end at 3:30pm or when all the candy has been given away (whichever comes first). Costumes are encouraged. We also need volunteers to decorate their trunks (not too scary, please!) and bring some goodies to hand out. If you have ever wished that you got a few trick or treaters and/or miss seeing children enjoying the holiday, we promise that you’ll have a great time.

We have 20 parking places available, so please sign up your vehicle no later than Friday, October 13 by contacting the Children’s Department at the Smithtown Main Building. Set up for all cars will begin at 1pm.

Staff Pick

Guns, Germs, and Steel by Jared Diamond
In his Pulitzer Prize winning book, Jared Diamond convincingly argues that geographical and environmental factors shaped the modern world. Marking the 20th anniversary of its publication this year, Guns, Germs, and Steel greatly advanced our understanding of human societies and stunningly dismantled racially based theories of human history.
