Section 1800

THE SMITHTOWN LIBRARY INTERNET POLICY

The Smithtown Library provides both home and in-library open access to the Internet and attendant electronic services such as electronic mail and selected information resources, via the gateway SuffolkNet/Web, specially developed for this purpose by the Suffolk Cooperative Library System. Internet access is considered a logical extension of traditional reference and informational services offered by the library.

  1. Any adult Smithtown Library card holder in good standing, eighteen years of age or older, may apply for an Internet account. The applicant may be asked to show proof of age. Persons under eighteen years of age will be required to have the parent come into the Library to also sign the Internet application. Loss of library-card-holder-in-good-standing status will result in the cancellation of a patron's Internet account.

  2. Applying for an account will allow a Smithtown Library card holder to use the Internet computers available in any of the four branches of The Smithtown Library after signing this agreement to abide by the Library's computer use policies and having a SuffolkWeb sticker affixed to their library card.

  3. Parents who allow their children to have access to the Internet should be aware that The Smithtown Library has no control over this research tool and assumes no responsibility for its content, quality, accuracy, or currency. The Internet may contain materials of a controversial nature. It is the responsibility of parents to monitor their children's selections. We encourage parents to remain with their children while they use the Internet at the Library.

  4. As this Internet service does not have unlimited capacity, please be courteous of other users and observe the following guidelines:
    1. Limit use to one hour.
    2. Delete e-mail promptly.
    3. Keep your directory clean. Download and delete regularly.
    4. Log off the system before editing and printing downloaded files.
  5. The person in whose name the account and password were issued is responsible at all times for the proper use of the account.

  6. Any use of this service for unlawful purposes or transmission of any material in violation of any U.S. or New York State regulation is prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to, copyrighted material; threatening or obscene material; expressions of bigotry, racism, or hate; or material protected by trade secret.

  7. Any user's traffic which crosses another network may be subject to that network's acceptable use policy.

  8. Attempts to degrade, disrupt or destroy system performance are prohibited.

  9. The Library is not equipped to provide personalized instruction to the Internet. A forum for group instruction is available via monthly Introduction to SuffolkNet sessions, and Internet Users Group meetings.

  10. Prospective users of Internet stations in the Library may be required to attend an introduction or sign a waiver stating that they have a thorough knowledge of how to use the Internet.
