Homework Helpers

Volunteers will work one-on-one with children in grades K-5 assisting them with homework and studying. All volunteers must submit an application and a letter of recommendation prior to the start of the program. The application is available at both the Adult and Children's Reference Desks at the Commack Branch. Each teen will receive one hour of community service. Register
 
Junior MakerSpace Volunteers
Thursday, December 7 • 4:00-5:00pm
Join this volunteer program and help young children tinker in this one-of-a-kind lab that explores science, simple mechanics, elements of design and other creative projects. Each teen will be paired with child to make a unique creation. Each teen will receive one hour of community service. Register
 
Hour of Code Volunteers - Star Wars
Friday, December 8 • 4:00-5:00pm 
Children ages 8 – 10 will be paired with teens in grades 6-12 for an introduction to computer coding starring characters from the Star Wars films. Some computer experience necessary. Register
 
Wool Needle Felting
Tuesday, December 19 • 7:00-8:00pm
By using a special barbed needle, teens will be able to use wool to create a beautiful work of art that can be framed or used as a patch. Register
 
Chess Buddies Volunteers
Wednesday, December 20 • 4:00-5:00pm 
Teach younger children how to play chess. You do not have to be a chess expert to volunteer! There will be a 30-minute tutorial at the beginning. Each teen will receive one hour of community service. Register

Light up the night by creating these beautiful votive candle holders. Teens will use paint to create unique designs that cast a beautiful glow. Register

Earn community service by reading to a younger book buddy. It is a rewarding experience that you won't want to miss. Register

Be paired with a younger child and help him/her with their LEGO® creation. Each teen will receive one hour of community service. Register
 
3D Print Design With Tinkercad
Thursday, January 31 • 4:00-5:00pm 
Build a 3D object using Tinkercad. Tinkercad is a simple, online 3D design and printing app that can be used to make 3D toys, prototypes, Minecraft models, jewelry and more. Join us for this introductory tutorial with our Teen Mobile Learn Lab. Register

The Last of the Doughboys: The Forgotten Generation and Their Forgotten World War by Richard Rubin
Collected over ten years, Richard Rubin's book features interviews with the last remaining World War I veterans, aged 101 to 113, to paint a picture of a time and a generation that, despite memorials and history lessons, is quickly fading away.

Recycle Station

The Smithtown Library collects un-needed eyeglasses for recycling through the Suffolk Cooperative Library System's services for the sight-impaired.  glasses
The Library is no longer accepting cell phones for recycling.
