Program Description

Event Details

Explore the hidden history of English in New York City-- a history that encompasses social class, immigration, culture, economics, and, of course, real estate, with Elyse Graham (E.J. White), professor of English at Stony Brook University, language historian, and author of several books, including You Talkin’ to Me?: The Unruly History of New York English. Come for the little-known facts (C-3PO was originally written to have a New York accent; “confidence man” started in reference to a specific New York City criminal) and stay for explanations of the “g” in “Lawn Guyland,” why New Yorkers drop their r’s, and what Midwesterners don’t understand about “New York Nice.”
